USAID-EQUALLS2 helps out-of-school children and youth in Mindanao

Koronadal City (16 February) -- As it aims to help improve the education sector in Mindanao by providing relevant learning and livelihood skills to help out-of-school children and youth (OSCY) earn a living, the United State Agency for International Development - Education Quality Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills Phase 2 (USAID-EQUALLS2) offers a core set of interventions towards at increasing access to quality education and livelihood skills training.

It had helped 611 participants who graduated from Alternative Learning System Program (ALS) and 276 trainees of the Vocational Technical Training Program in partnership with International Youth Foundation (IYF).

The EQUALLS2 project is implemented under the Education Development Center (EDC), a US based non- profit organization in partnership with a team of international and local organization with expertise in education and youth development in Mindanao. Project intervention are delivered in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and DepEd in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) together with local government units and education stakeholders in the community.

Objectives of the program is to increase learning opportunities for children and youth through community support for education, strengthen capacity for teaching English, Math and Science at the elementary level and improve relevance and training for out-of-school children and youth (OSCY).

The 611 are from the municipalities of Malapatan in Sarangani, Santo Niņo and Tantangan in South Cotabato, and the municipalities of Lambayong and Esperanza in Sultan Kudarat provinces.

The project is being implemented in partnership with the Department of Education, Education Livelihood Skills Alliance (ELSA), Consuelo Foundation, Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA) together with the local government units.

Department of Education 12 Regional Director Dr. Luz S. Almeda during the graduation thanked USAID-EQUALLS2 for the intervention activities for the out-of-school children and youth on livelihood skills for them to earn a living and be a part of a future competent workforce. She is also hoping that this program is not the end but beginning for many OSCY to benefits. She also asked the representative of the USAID to pour more projects and program for the improvement of the OSCY especially in Mindanao.

Tom Crehan Chief of Education Office of the USAID congratulated the graduates as she said "I feel so proud for doing something to help the people of the Philippines especially the OSCY in Mindanao and the American people will continue to extend more help for the improvement of the youth."
