DOST-Siquijor conducts MPEX prequalification visit

Siquijor (17 February) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST team conducted MPEX to SMEs in the province on February 10, 2009. MPEX or Manufacturing Productivity Extension for Export Promotion is a program intended to help increase the productivity of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) in the province manufacturing sector. The Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) was given the task of implementing MPEX.

The MPEX program has also given adequate opportunity for faculty members of cooperating universities to work on real problems thereby enriching their professional experience. MPEX has shown its relevance to the current concerns for productivity and quality concerns.

In 1998, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. 7 was chosen and funded by TAPI to directly manage and implement the program in Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas.

The objectives of MPEX are to: Identify strategies to improve productivity of small and medium manufacturing enterprises in the export sector and potential exporters; recommend productivity improvement measures for immediate implementation; and develop capability to provide other forms of assistance to develop the manufacturing sector.

The Owners/representatives of potential firm beneficiaries are invited to a matching session for interview and evaluation. DOST 7 shall be responsible for the identification and selection of final firm beneficiaries. Matching of firms with MPEX teams is done through DOST 7 in consultation with the firm beneficiary and team concerned. Firms shall signify their agreement to participate in the MPEX program in writing.

The areas involve in the productivity improvement are the following: capacity utilization, wastage levels, product design & packaging, layout, production, planning & control, materials management system, quality control assurance system, safety and housekeeping practices facilities, Financial Systems & Controls, human resources utilization, work organizations, manufacturing systems, process and operations, machine & equipment utilization & maintenance of plant.
