Catbalogan City (February 19) -- Senior citizens, LGU officials and barangay folks joined hands in an early morning exercise that the Department of Health (DOH) called "Hataw" February 17 at Matuginao town, an inland Samar municipality.
Personnel from the Samar Provincial Health Office, DOH officials sailed to Matuginao to launch another DOH program "Healthy Lifestyle".
According to Evelyn Domingo, PHO medical technologist, the campaign on Healthy Lifestyle is embodied in President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Executive Order No. 958 declaring 2005 - 2015 as the Decade of Healthy Lifestyle.
The same health official added that the public is encouraged to change their way of life to one that is healthy, to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, observe proper nutrition, minimize intake of alcohol and maintain a smoke-free environment.
Once again, people are reminded to practice "health seeking" behavior like regular visit to the doctor for early diagnosis of any ailment and prompt treatment.
In the same activity, the LGU officials held a bloodletting activity where they collected some 27 bags of blood; the first donor was Mayor Carlos dela Cruz.
De la Cruz also urged his town mates to practice healthy living in his short message.
The blood donations were immediately transported to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) for screening from HIV, Hepa C, STD and other diseases. Other donors come from the PNP, army and two cause-oriented women.
Matuginao, as learned from Mayor dela Cruz is eyeing the institutionalization of bloodletting not only for the SANDUGO award but to save the lives of its residents.
The healthy lifestyle group is set to make the rounds of the LGUs of San Jose de Buan, Daram, Pinabacdao and Hinabangan, all of Samar province. (PIA-Samar) [top]
