Malunggay saves lives - FNRI

Borongan City (19 February) -- Malunggay can save lives.
Thus said Mr. Salvador R. Serrano, SRS II, of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) today in a Media Conference at the Governor's Office Conference Hall.
Serrano pointed that like the coconut tree, almost all the parts of the Malunggay tree is beneficial to the health; the leaves, pods and flower have medicinal value. With proper research the humbly leaf can indeed save lives. But Serrano stressed that further research and analysis of the Malunggay must be done to ensure the safety of the users, Serrano stressed.
He added that Vitamin A in the Malunggay is bigger than milk and Carrots, it also has iron, protein and a considerable amount of potassium.
Malunggay is only one of the functional foods which President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered DOST-FNRI conduct further research. Squash, Coconut flour are also health alternatives in increasing the nutritional status among children. (PIA-Eastern Samar) [top]
