Cagayan de Oro City (20 February) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the Department of Agriculture (DA) to lead a task group to conduct a compliance audit of the strategic provisions of the Fisheries Code, particularly on the determination of the maximum sustainable yield, the total catch allowable and the carrying capacity of our marine ecosystems.
With the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), DA shall conduct massive information, education and communication campaigns with coastal local governments to implement Section 81 of Republic Act (RA) 8530, otherwise known as the Fisheries Code, mandating that at least 15% of their municipal waters must be devoted to a fish sanctuary.
Per Executive Order (EO) 774 signed by President Arroyo, the Presidential Adviser on Climate Change (PACC) shall compile the list of complying Local Government Units (LGUs).
They shall be fully assisted in their implementation efforts of the Code, if they desire.
Non-complaint LGUs shall be sanctioned as appropriate by the DILG.
The DA and DILG Secretaries shall then report to the President personally or thru the PACC every Friday on the progress of the initiative provided by this section of EO 774 with a sense of urgency. (PIA 10) [top]
