Manila (20 February) -- Malacanang declared February 23 as a special holiday for all students from the private and public schools.
The declaration however excludes workers.
The palace declared the day as holiday to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution in EDSA.
According to Press Secretary Cerge Remonde, as he was quoted by radio reports, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo had already signed Proclamation 1728, one which declares holiday on Monday.
"The historic event which restored and ushered political, social and economic reforms in the country, serves as an inspiration to Filipinos everywhere as we continue to chart our collective effort as a nation and as a people," the President said in issuing the proclamation, according to Remonde.
The former Presidential Management Staff Chief, now Press Secretary added that the president consulted with the Department of Labor and Employment about the day's declaration.
He was further quoted as saying that the labor sector upon arriving at a concensus, has pushed for the President to exclude workers from the holiday on that day.
Remonde said some workers, especially those being paid on a daily basis, would rather work on that day to earn extra money. (PIA) [top]
