Kiangan, Lamut top 2009 Ifugao provincial math challenge

Lagawe, Ifugao (21 February) -- Pupils from the Kiangan Central School (KCS) and students from the Ifugao Provincial Science High School (PSHS) of Lamut topped the recent 2009 Ifugao Province Schools Division Math Challenge in the elementary and secondary levels held here on February 13.

The KCS pupils won four first places in the six grades elementary level while PSHS garnered three first places in the four years secondary level. The other two first places in the elementary level were taken by the municipality of Lagawe while the remaining first place in the secondary level was captured by Saint Joseph School also of Kiangan.

The competition is a joint endeavor between the Metro Bank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP) and the Department of Education (DEPED) with the objective to contribute in improving the quality of Mathematics education in the Philippines.

Specifically it aims to awaken greater interest in Mathematics among elementary and high school students in both private and public schools all over the country, encourage them to strive for excellence in Mathematics, master their basic mathematical skills, discover mathematical talents among the students and develop the values of hardwork, perseverance, honesty, teamwork and sportsmanship in lieu of the deteriorating quality of education specially in the field of math.

This competition was participated by all elementary and secondary students, however only the winning Grade VI pupils and 4th year students who will participate in the regional and national levels competition slated on February 27 for the regional level and April 3 for the national competition.

The first placers in the elementary level from KCS are Angelito Dulinayan Jr. and Shai Guyguyon for Grade 1, Sofia Dominique Dulinayan and Trisha Anne Cattiling for Grade III, Jean Perie Indunan and Joy Dulawan for Grade V and Carmie Lynda Guimbatan and Ebbr Codamon for Grade VI.

Lagawe Central School took the top place in Grade II represented by Laurence Tristan Odsinada and John Ralph Habbiling while Chiara June Bolla and Ashley Kate Lumauig of the Cudog Elementary School also of Lagawe won it for Grade IV.

In the secondary level, first place for first year was taken by Charlene Bulong and Jean Shann Baguilat of the Saint Joseph School of Kiangan, the second year was topped by Kelvin Frank Serrano and John Edison Vergara of the Ifugao PSHS, third year by Xylona Lohan and Esther Butic of the Ifugao PSHS and fourth year by Jackson Dulnuan and Charlene Norial also of the Ifugao PSHS.
