Tabuk, Kalinga (21 February) -- The National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCCA) provided financial support for the conduct of a forum that formed part of the this year's Laga pageantry that added fun and excitement to the 14th founding anniversary of Kalinga.

Experts from the province's weaving industry, which the NCCA calls as "culture masters", were tapped as lecturers. They gave briefings on back-strap weaving used in the production of cloth and loom products.

Actual demonstrations were also shown on cogon grass and banana fiber processing which are materials in making textile and other items like table runners and place mats.

NCCA has a program on ethnic designs documentation needed in the preservation of a particular ethnic group and its culture. The country is known for its very rich culture shared among varied ethnic groups distributed in different parts of the archipelago.

The ethnicity of a tribe is reflected from its indigenous products that give significance of its culture and heritage. Promotion of these designs would preserve ethnic identity.

In the province, NCCA has opened several projects in promoting the Kalinga culture that has been spoken through the woven products displayed during trade fairs here and outside the province.

Noryn Bagano of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provincial office said the P42,500 financial support from NCCA to this year's Laga forum was used in providing honorariums to the speakers and performers, documentation, transportation and other incidental expenses. (PIA-Kalinga) [top]
