BSU hosts Olympics of state colleges in the North
La Trinidad, Benguet (21 February) -- The Benguet State University (BSU) will host the 2009 Olympics of the Association of State Colleges and Universities - Solid North (ASCU-SN) slated on February 22-25.
According to Olympics Over-all Director Estrellita Corpuz of BSU, a four- day sports competition with the theme "Magka-ugnay", will be participated by delegates from the 16 SUCs of Regions 1, 2 and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
The Olympics starts on February 23 with a parade of delegates along the main thoroughfare of La Trinidad which will end at the BSU open gym for the opening ceremony. Senator Manny Villar is expected to grace the event as the guest of honor and speaker.
Lined up sports divisions include Baseball, Basketball for men and women, Football/Soccer; Sepak takraw; Athletics; Archery (men/women); Chess (men/women); Softball; Volleyball; Badminton (men/women); Table Tennis (men/women); Lawn Tennis (men/women) Swimming (men/Women) Dance Sport and the Search for Miss ASCU-SN 2009 that would highlight the Olympic games.
Participating SUCs of Region 1 include the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMSU), Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Pangasinan State University (PSU) and the University of Northern Philippines (UNP).
Region 2 participants are Batanes State College (BSC), Cagayan State College (CSC), Isabela State College(ISC) and the Nueva Viscaya State College (NVSC).
Delegates from the Cordillera will come from the Abra Institute of Science and Technology (AIST), Apayao State College (ASC), Ifugao College of Agriculture and Forestry (ISCAF), Kalinga-Apayao State Polytechnic College (KASPC), University of the Philippines-Baguio (UP), Mountain Province State Polytechnic College(MPSPC) and host BSU.
Now on its third year, the annual sports activity, being conducted by the ASCU aims to further develop camaraderie and to have stronger ties with each member institutions through sports, Corpuz explained. She added that the Olympic is also an avenue where to identify and develop athletes who have potentials that would represent the region as well as the SUCs.
The Olympics which started in 2007 was hosted by the Isabela State University followed by the Pangasinan State Univesity in 2008. (fnm/PIA-CAR) [top]
