Comelec sanitizes list of voters; accepts new registrants

By Ninfa B Quirante

Catbalogan City (February 21) -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Samar has started weeding out voters in preparation for a cleaner slate come elections in 2010.

As of January 2009 after the Electoral Registration Board meeting, the ERB has registered some 45, 036 in the city of Catbalogan in some 349 voting precincts.

According to COMELEC Catbalogan, some 8, 604 names were erased due to death and failure to vote in two successive elections.

Some of these voters who have failed to vote twice may also consider reactivation or transfer, Comelec added.

In Calbayog City, Mr. Salvador Cruz, Comelec Officer here said that voters could total to a 100 thousand.

In a radio interview done by DYOG Calbayog City, Cruz said that based on the barangay elections in October 29, 2007, Calbayog City had some 102 thousand voters then.

However, some 14 thousand have failed to vote twice, 397 of them have died and some 210 transferred.

Presently, with all deductions some 87 thousand are now left in the voters list.

Cruz is hopeful than an additional 10% will be added to the voters' list considering the ten-months registration period.

Meanwhile, in Catbalogan City, Comelec reminds the registrants going 18 before elections 2010 to register on May 12, 2009 and beyond based on Comelec Resolution 8514.

The same election-related activities are going on in the other towns of Samar, the Provincial Election Officer, Atty. Corazon Montallana said. (PIA-Samar) [top]
