USVA reps in Tacloban to interview Filvets for US benefit claims

Tacloban City (February 23) -- Representatives of the US Veterans Affairs office of the US Embassy are expected to arrive in Tacloban in the afternoon of February 23 in order to interview and assist the World War II veterans in Region 8 in facilitating their claims to the $198 million US Compensation Package for the Filipino Veterans.

Philippine Veterans Affairs Office head in Region 8, Ms. Nenita C. Brazil informed the Philippine Information Agency that the USVA representatives Ma. Lourdes Cruz, Marie June Carlos and Marie Linda Caringal will interview of the claimants on February 24-26.

The good Governor of Leyte, Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla, graciously agreed for the use of the SMED Center at the Capitol Grounds to be the venue of the interview, Ms. Brazil said.

The PVAO extension office in Tacloban is too small, it will not be able to accommodate the less than 1000 living World War II veterans in Region 8, Ms. Brazil added.

The requirements which the claimants should bring when they come for the interview include two valid IDs, claim number from the USVA; PVAO claim number; service serial number; PVAO bank account number and passports for the US citizens.

Personal appearance of the veterans is also requested because the benefit being given by the US government is only for living World War II veterans, Ms. Brazil underscored.

Ms. Brazil called on the World War II veterans in Region 8 not to buy any application forms or any other papers from unscrupulous person because the representatives of the USVA will give and help them fill up their application forms, for free.

Ms. Brazil also called on the unscrupulous people to spare the old WWII veterans from their activities because these Filvets have waited for so long for this benefit from the US government.

The living World War II veterans, if their claims will be approved will receive $15,000 for the US citizens or $9,000 for the veterans who are Filipino citizens. (PIA 8) [top]
