Nearly 1000 Filvets in Region 8 start processing claims on US benefits

Tacloban City (February 24) -- The nearly 1000 Filvets in Region 8 will start processing their claim on February 24, at the SMED Center, Capitol Grounds, Tacloban City, just one week after US President Barack Obama signed the US Economic Stimulus Bill that grants cash benefits for Filipino World War II veterans in payment of damages for human suffering that they endured in their military service during the Second World War.

Representatives of the US Veterans Affairs office of the US Embassy arrived in the afternoon of February 23 and immediately met with the local PVAO officials to make the necessary arrangements for the interview of and assistance for the World War II veterans in Region 8 in order to facilitate their claims to the $198 million US Compensation Package.

The USVA representatives Ma. Lourdes Cruz, Marie June Carlos and Marie Linda Caringal will interview of the claimants and help them in the processing of their applications from February 24 to 26, Philippine Veterans Affairs Office head in Region 8, Ms. Nenita C. Brazil informed the Philippine Information Agency.

The good Governor of Leyte, Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla, graciously agreed for the use of the SMED Center at the Capitol Grounds to be the venue of the interview, Ms. Brazil said. The PVAO extension office in Tacloban is too small, it will not be able to accommodate the less than 1000 living World War II veterans in Region 8, Ms. Brazil added.

The requirements which the claimants should bring when they come for the interview include two valid IDs, claim number from the USVA; PVAO claim number; service serial number; PVAO bank account number and passports for the US citizens.

Personal appearance of the veterans is also requested because the benefit being given by the US government is only for living World War II veterans, Ms. Brazil underscored.

Asked the exact number of living World War II Veteran in Region 8, Ms. Brazil said that list is with the USVA, but she estimates them to be less than 1,000. In Tacloban, there are more than 100 living Filvets, she said.

Do not pay any one to process your application, Ms. Brazil said. Shel called on the World War II veterans in Region 8 not to buy any application forms or any other papers from unscrupulous person because the representatives of the USVA will give and help them fill up their application forms, for free.

Ms. Brazil said that some fixers have already started contacting Filvets. Others are even selling application forms and newspaper clippings with the requirements needed.

Ms. Brazil also called on the unscrupulous people to spare the old WWII veterans from their activities because these Filvets have waited for so long for this benefit from the US government. (PIA 8) [top]
