Southern Leyte nutritionally better-off throughout Eastern Visayas
Maasin City, Southern Leyte (24 February) -- In a joint meeting held Thursday with the Provincial Nutrition Committee and the Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAOs) here, Carina Santiago, Regional Director of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) based in Tacloban City revealed that Southern Leyte is nutritionally better-off compared to other provinces throughout Eastern Visayas region.
The only province with a two-digit number, Southern Leyte had only 9.20%, the lowest incidence of malnourished children, based on the 2008 Operation Timbang results. While Northern Samar got the highest rate with 26.32%, according to the presentation of Ms. Santiago at the Supercha Function Hall here.
Southern Leyte was followed by Eastern Samar with 18,25%; Biliran – 18.38%; Leyte province – 18.29%; Samar – 26.03% and 26.32% for Northern Samar.
Santiago during the meeting discussed the outputs of the program implementation review. The vision of the program stated that by 2015 and beyond, Eastern Visayas shall have become a nutritionally empowered region where people are food-secure, well-nourished and healthy.
While the mission, targets, startegies and goals to improve nutritional status in the region were also specified. Some activities planned for the year 2009 for nutrition program were lined-up. It will also be a preparation for the coming national evaluation scheduled on April, this year, Santiago added.
The joint meeting attended by (9) Municipal Health Officers, (3) Public Health Nurses and PNC-Provincial Technical Working Group also organized the Nutrition Action Officers Assocaition of the Philippines and elected officers for Southern Leyte chapter.
Elected President was Dr. Wayne Raymundo of Tomas Oppus; Dr. Ma. Luisa de Jesus from Anahawan as Vice Prresident; Dr. Eva Paladapat as Secretary; Dr. Eliza Coraza as Treasurer; Dr. Lino Luis Clarito as Press Relations Officer and Dr. Dolorosa Branzuela as Auditor.
