OSYs to produce herb-based health soaps for school kids

Iloilo City (24 February) -- School children suffering from various skin ailments will have herb-based health soaps to be produced by out-of-school youth who will earn income from it.

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said about 1.3 million public schools students will initially benefit from its cash-in-soap program which seeks to give livelihood to out-of-school youths while addressing the health needs of pupils in public schools.

Some 12,300 trained OSYs are expected to produce health soaps, like bars of Citronella soap for head lice, bars of Acapulco or guava soap to combat skin diseases and bars of calamansi soap for personal hygiene.

Lapus said the engagement of OSYs in soap making falls under the Arroyo administration's Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP).

The soap production is slated from April to June, where each OSY is expected to earn P4,000 for making 2,000 bars.

The 20-day production period is expected to yield about 24.6 million bars, to be given to student beneficiaries for school year 2009-2010.

Lapus also said that the program has a multiplier effect, as partners in the community can be tapped for sustainability. (ESS/PIA 6) [top]
