Pangasinan to host Special Olympics Nat'l Games on March 3-4

By Danny O. Sagun

Lingayen, Pangasinan (25 February) -- This big province will host for the first time the Special Olympics Philippines (SOP) National Games on March 3 to 4 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) here.

The 12th SOP National Games, which is held every three years, will serve as a qualifier to the World Special Olympics to be held in Athens, Greece on 2011. The games will involve mentally-challenged but able persons all over the country.

Some 2,000 delegates composed of athletes, coaches, guardians and volunteers are expected to attend.

More than 650 athletes are clustered into 11 teams. They will compete in 10 sports disciplines namely: athletics, aquatics, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, bocce (lawn bowling), table tennis, power lifting, soccer and swimming.

Realizing the special needs of the participants, the provincial government saw to it that the athletes feel comfortable and safe thru thorough preparation.

Six eco-tourism buses were scheduled to ferry delegates from pick-up point at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, Quezon City to Lingayen and vice versa.

The provincial government supports the SOP organizers in their objective to give the members of the differently-abled sector a chance to realize their potential, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy and friendship.

During the recent World Special Olympics held in Shanghai, China in 200. The, Philippines brought home 53 medals including nine golds. (PIA Pangasinan/PIO) [top]
