Feature: Library hub in Pangasinan - first of its kind in Ilocos Region

By Venus H. Sarmiento

Binalonan, Pangasinan (25 February) -- The Department of Education has always aimed at developing love for and habit of reading among students, thus the Library Hub project concept in 2003.

The Division of Pangasinan II based in this town is one of the lucky recipients of the project being the first division in Region I to have one.

The Library hub stands in a 300 square meter-lot inside the Don Juan Macaraeg National High School in this town. It was funded by the Department of Education with financial support from Mayor Ramon N. Guico, Jr, Congressman Mark Cojuangco and Vice Mayor Ramon Guico III. The project costs some estimated five million pesos.

The hub was named Doņa Eva Macapagal Memorial Library Hub in honor of the late mother of Her Excellency, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who hails from Binalonan.

The library hub is now operational. It is equipped with around 68,601 volumes of story books with 281 different titles which are being borrowed by different schools of the division and delivered for free. After 25 school days use by the borrowers, the books are being retrieved by the Division Library Hub staff to be lent to other schools.

Pangasinan II Schools Division Superintendent Armando Aquino said the library hub will greatly help the students, noting that reading comprehension is one problem they encountered.

To date, there are 43,780 volumes of books already borrowed and 19,910 volumes retrieved. Books are stored inside plastic bin containers and orderly placed in metal shelves to keep them away from termites.

Pupils and students from 562 schools-459 elementary and 103 secondary- of the division are now benefitting from the project.

No less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo herself inaugurated the structure on yesterday during her visit to the town. (PIA-Pangasinan) [top]
