149 corn farmers finish four months training on IPM-FFS

Koronadal City (25 February) -- One hundred forty nine (149) corn farmers of barangay Sison, Busok, Tuka, Kinayao and Kapaya, Bagumbayan Sultan Kudarat successfully completed their four-months season long training on KASAKALIKASAN - Integrated Pest Management -Farmers Field School(IPM-FFS).
DA-12 Regional IPM Program Officer Gabriel Dominguez said, IPM-FFS is a learning process that revolved around the basic concept such as growing a healthy crop by using resistant varieties, better seed selection process and efficient nutrient, water and cultural management. It is also a learning tool to develop the abilities of the farmers so that they can become better decision makers and expert in their own fields. He also encouraged the farmers to apply and help spread the IPM technology to others. IPM discourages the use of pesticides which are unfriendly to human and the environment.
On the other hand, Bagumbayan Mayor Bernadita Bito-onon said with all the technologies introduced in FFS, it is now time that farmers in her town will become more profitable and can increase their income. They were taught how to make their own seeds and organic fertilizer. She also encouraged her constituents to implement what they have learned from the season long training at "Sabayan n'yo ng sipag at tiyaga, " Bito-onon disclosed.
With intensified effort of the Department of Agriculture towards national food security and self sufficiency, KASAKALIKSAN, the national program plays an important support role as IPM-FFS become the pest management strategy and extension methodology of the Ginintuang Masaganang Ani (GMA) programs and was proven effective.
The mass graduation was conducted on January 29, 2009 held at Bagumbayan Gym and was attended in by the LGU officials of Sultan Kudarat, DA-12 staff, and barangay officials of Bagumbayan. To date these farmers are among the 400,000 graduates of IPM FFS nationwide. (DA12/PIA 12) [top]
