DA-12 inaugurates two flat bed dryers in M'lang

Koronadal City (25 February) -- The Department of Agriculture in region inaugurated two flatbed mechanical dryers in two separate barangays in M'lang, North Cotabato recently.

Ginintuang Masaganang Ani (GMA) Regional Rice program Coordinator Ray Embajador said the dryers were awarded to Dugong, Langkong, and Sangat Irrigators Association Inc. (DLSIA) of Barangay Langkong and Bagontapay, New Barbasa, Buayan and Lipaga Irrigators Association (BNBLIA) of Barangay Bagontapay all in the municipality of M'lang.

Significant losses and quality deterioration occur because high moisture content of freshly harvested grain is not immediately reduced to a level safe for storage. The situation becomes more difficult during rainy season when sun drying cannot be relied upon. Thus, the use of the mechanical dryers such as this facility is an option, Embajador added.

The dryer, which cost P500,000 each, can dry six tons of palay from dripping wet to 14% moisture content in 8-12 hours using a drying temperature of 40-45*C. The dryer is constructed by the Bureau of Postharvest and Research and Extension (BPRE) and it's a grant from the Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund o ACEF of the Department of Agriculture.

A total of 29 out of 58 flatbed dryers are now operational and are being used by irrigators association in region 12. North Cotabato has an allocation of 11 dryers to be put up while Sultan Kudarat Province with 18 and 29 units for South Cotabato.

Pablita Paclibar of DLSIA and Nelson Magbanua of BNBLIA, both presidents of the IA thanked all that made this facility functional. They can now dry paddies even on rainy days and the dryer has low investment and operating cost and also low on maintenance. A far cry from what they have been doing before. Together with their members, they assured that they will expand and develop this so that others will also benefit from this project. (eapasaol/rafid-da12/PIA 12) [top]
