P71 million spent for South Cotabato agri programs in 2008
Koronadal City (25 February) -- The local Agriculture sector in South Cotabato reported that it has implemented a total of PhP71,450,100.00 worth of agricultural projects in the province for the year 2008.
The fundings for the agriculture sector projects were released to ensure food security and sufficiency as the world is in the midst of financial crisis, in line with the directives of Agriculture secretary Arthur Yap, the report said.
Further, said report from the agriculture sector revealed that Support to Certified Palay Seeds Assistance Program got the biggest share of PhP21,987,600.00. Fertilizer Discounts granted to farmers reached PhP10,723 while Infrastructure projects such as construction of farm-to-market roads got Php15M; irrigation with PhP13M; Training Centers for PhP3M and Pre and Post-Harvest facilities with PhP2,295,000.00.
With this huge spending for agriculture support projects, the province was able to increase its yield in palay production by 7% as compared to its 2007 377,752 metric tons palay production.
