Roxas City (26 February) -- A synchronized barangay assembly day in the country will be on March 28, 2009.
The upcoming barangay affair is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 342 which declares the last Saturday of March 2003 and the third Saturday of October 2003 and every year thereafter as "Barangay Assembly Day" in the country.
The barangays are mandated by the Local Government Code during the assembly to undertake activities like presentation of accomplishment and financial reports from July to December 2008 and discussion of problems, issues and concerns particularly on solid waste management and proliferation of illegal drugs trade.
"The barangay officials may undertake other activities they deem appropriate to get the interest of the residents to attend the barangay assembly," said a Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) memorandum circular.
The circular also enjoins barangay officials to prepare posters or banners to be posted/hanged for at least two weeks before the assembly date in at least three conspicuous places like barangay hall, plaza and main street among others.
"All provincial governors, city and municipal mayors are also enjoined to extend assistance to the barangays to ensure the successful conduct of the Day. (PIA) [top]
