DPWH hires 20,000 construction workers in Region 2

Tuguegarao City (26 February) -- As an immediate response to ease the effect of global economic recession, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 2 is now hiring skilled and unskilled construction workers for the lined up projects to be implemented this month of March.

About 20,000 unemployed individuals will be accommodated under the "Programang Pangtrabaho ni Pangulong Gloria," an emergency employment program for those who were affected by the global economic crisis here and abroad.

Regional Director Eugenio R. Pipo said the President has approved 2 Billion worth of infrastructure projects in different districts of the region.

Pipo announced that the jobs fair is open for civil engineers, supervisors (foremen), heavy equipment operators, steel men, laborers, kamineros (street sweepers), masons and lateros.

"We will not require highly technical qualifications as long as they can perform construction works and at least they are high school graduates. They can apply to our district offices and here in the regional office…" Pipo said

The Director explained that they will assess and match the applicants based on the perceived skills needed for the project and they will submit the names of applicants to the contractors for immediate hiring. If the contractors will deny the applicants then they will require them to justify the denial of the recommended applicants.

Dir. Pipo further stated that the applicants to be hired are assured of just compensation based on the minimum wage required per province.

"The private sectors are now reducing employees due to the crisis that's why the government increases its employment activities for the provision of food to every Filipino family," Pipo added.

He further informed that the President approved several bridge projects, road construction and rehabilitations, building projects and other construction works that will be implemented for the whole year of 2009.

Representatives of the contractors here also assured to accommodate applicants based on the matching list of DPWH and be treated fair and just.

The program is a joint undertaking of the Department of Public Works and High Ways (DPWH), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Philippine Contractors Association (PCA) and the National Construction Association of the Philippines (NACAP). (PIA Cagayan) [top]
