NAVFORCEN recovers endangered corals at Punta Engaņo

Cebu City (26 February) -- Undetermined tons of illegally-extracted corals with an estimated market value of Php45,000.00 were seized by the combined elements of the Naval Forces Central (NAVFORCEN) and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-7 (BFAR-7) in Sitio Buot, Punta Engaņo, Lapu-Lapu City.

Assorted precious corals identified as fungia mushroom corals and acropora black and blue corals were confiscated last February 20, 2009 around 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Naval Special Operations Unit 5 (NAVSOU-5) personnel likewise defused three (3) bottles of ammonium nitrate explosives primed with non-electric blasting caps which were believed to be intended for use in illegal fishing activities.

Five (5) unidentified persons believed to be responsible for the hauling and processing of the seized items were sighted in the area. However, they managed to scamper into different directions and eluded arrest.

The confiscated items are now in the custody of NAVFORCEN for safekeeping and proper disposition. (PIA-7-Cebu/Navy) [top]
