DSWD-X urges business firms to honor 20% senior citizens discount

by Charmaine P. Tadlas

Cagayan de Oro City (27 February) -- There had been complaints emerging that some business establishments still do not honor the 20% discount for senior citizens.

These reports stirred the Department to invoke Republic Act 9257 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Welfare Act of 2003 to non-abiding establishments which refuse to provide these privileges to the senior citizens.

Atty. Araceli F. Solamillo, Regional Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 10, reminds hotels and similar lodging establishments, restaurants, recreation centers, drugstores and pharmacies, medical and optical clinics, funeral parlors, transportation facilities and similar establishments the penalties R.A. 9257 entails.

"If these establishments refuse to honor the 20% discount reserved for our senior citizens, then their officials will be liable to these complaints," she warned.

"Upon filing of an appropriate complaint against the establishment, and after due notice and hearing, the proper authorities may cause the cancellation or revocation of their business permit, permit to operate, franchise and other similar privileges granted to any business entity," Atty. Solamillo said.

The Department also encourages the municipal and city local government units to require all establishments covered by the Act to prominently display posters, stickers, and other notices that will generate public awareness of the rights and privileges of senior citizens and to ensure that the provisions of the Act are implemented to its fullest.
