Savellano announces flights of domestic airline in Vigan airport

By Freddie G. Lazaro

Vigan City (February 27) -- Ilocos Sur Governor Deogracias Victor "DV" B. Savellano announced that a privately–owned commercial airline was set to launch its flight in Mindoro Domestic Airport on March 19, 2009 here.

This developed when the provincial government approved the proposed 4 times a week air travel by Chairman Luc Helgen of the Inter – Island Airlines Company, a breakthrough in the province of Ilocos Sur to have commercial flights in the Mindoro Vigan Airport.

According to Savellano, the presence of commercial flights in the province will help boost the tourism and other economic industries here.

"Our province, which was considered as heritage province due to its UNESCO recognized sites: the Sta. Maria Church and the centuryold houses in Vigan City, has a lot to showcase when it comes to tourism, thus, with the flights of domestic airlines in Vigan airport, this will hasten the influct coming of tourists here," he explained.

The air travels of the 60 seater Inter-Island Airlines plane had been set with the following schedule: arrivals from Manila Domestic Airport to Vigan are every Thursday and Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM; and departures from Vigan to Manila are every Friday and Monday morning at 6:15 AM.

"With the existence of these flights, the province and Vigan City will become more accessible to foreign and domestic tourists and investors, which will contribute to the improvement of our trade and commercial industries," Savellano said.

"When more tourists' will arrived in the province, the private transport sectors and producers of unique local products will greatly benefited, thus, the presence of commercial flights in Vigan airport will generate job opportunities and better income to the local residents," he added.

To discuss important matters about the initial operations of the Inter-Island Airlines, a tourism summit was held recently at the Provincial Capitol. The summit was initiated by the provincinal government and was attended by leaders from the local government units (LGUs), business sectors, government sectors, private organizations, academe, tourism sectors, stakeholders and non-government organizations (NGOs).

Abra province Governor Eustaquio Bersamin, who was also present during the summit, expressed his willingness and support to the flight operations of private airlines in Vigan airport.

To sustain the flights of the airlines, Chairman Helgen told that at least 30 passengers will be maintained every travel.

It was learned that the air fare for one- way travel of a passenger was P3, 450.00.

For his part, Governor Savellano called the support and cooperation of all sectors in the province to sustain the continuing operations of the airline.

"I am appealing to the support of all sectors in this program because all of us will be significantly benefited," Savellano told. (PIA Ilocos Sur) [top]
