Kamp Pag-Asa calls for volunteers, sponsors

Davao City (28 February) -- Kamp Pag-asa, a 10-day summer camp for children with disabilities is calling on would be volunteers and sponsors willing to serve and donate much-needed resources for their coming summer camp to be held this April 16-25 at the Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Elementary School here in Davao City.

Guesting during the Feb. 27 episode of Kapihan sa PIA at the Philippine Information Agency Regional office in Quimpo Boulevard this City, Boy Allado, over-all coordinator of the project said that the 10th Kamp Pag-asa would involve around 500 people, about 150 children campers and 350 volunteers and staff.

He said the Camp is looking for volunteers which are willing to undergo training this March with a big heart to serve children with disabilities. Mr. Allado said that the camp is also calling kind-hearted sponsors who could donate their resources during the duration of the camp.

Started in 1999, Kamp Pag-Asa has accepted trainable young children with disabilities in the summer camp which trains the children on socialization, dancing, singing and other arts like drawing and mask making. Various activities also include field-trips, a "disco" event with a volunteer musical band. An activity is also line up where a family gets to host one camper for a day.

Although a project by the City Government through the Council for the Welfare of Persons With Disabilities. The City and its partner Non-Government Organizations are still facing logistical challenges in holding the camp.

Allado said that there are very supportive private establishments which not just tender resources like sponsoring meals and snacks but also take the time along with their employees in visiting and spending their day with the campers. Allado also said that the public, except the campers' parents are invited to visit the camp.

According to Mae Valentin, volunteer and incoming camp director, the camp is also in need of volunteers who could spend time with the kids. She said that volunteers undergo four-week training; she said everyone is invited to become a volunteer, even capable PWDs.
