PIA Press Release

1,558 Cordillera applicants troop to DPWH jobs fair, 918 hired

by Lito Dar

Baguio City (28 February) -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), in coordination with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), held a simultaneous Jobs Fair Monday in their regional and district offices nationwide. The said jobs fair is part of the President's "Programang Pantrabaho ni Pangulong Gloria."

Here in Cordillera, DPWH regional OIC Roy Manao, described the activity as generally successful. With the assistance of DOLE, they have entertained all the applicants and hired a large number of them, while others are referred to the offices of their choice.

DPWH-CAR records show 1,558 applicants registered in their different district engineering office in the region, and out of the total number of applicants 741 were hired by DPWH, 177 were hired by contractors, while the rest of the applicants are still under consideration.

In Abra, 94 applicants were hired, 168 in Apayao, 37 in Baguio City, 151 in Benguet, 205 in Ifugao, 10 in Kalinga and 253 in Mt Province. 48 contractors participated in the said jobs fair, which was also supported by the Philippine Constructors Association Inc (PCA) and the National Constructors Association of the Philippines (NACAP).

Various skilled and unskilled construction job vacancies are offered during the said jobs fair. DPWH-CAR will be fielding the accepted applicants on different SONA projects, road side maintenance, hunger-mitigation programs and pump priming projects in the region.

In an earlier statement, DPWH Sec Hermogenes Ebdane explained that the said jobs fair, is in line with the thrusts of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to create jobs for Filipinos, in order to cushion the impact of the global economic crisis, as it aims to provide gainful employment to workers displaced or affected by the current global recession.

The jobs fair shall also provide fiscal stimulus to spur economic growth in the locality and shall also reduce the percentage of unemployment nationwide, Sec Ebdane added. (PIA) [top]
