Search for Outstanding Centennial Women Leaders highlights Baguio Women's Month celebration

Baguio City (28 February) -- In observance of the Women's Month this March 2009, the city will once again celebrate the "Kababaihan Festival", in collaboration of the city government, through the City Social welfare and Development Office, Non Government and Peoples Organizations and in coordination with the City's Social Services, Women and Urban Poor Committee - chaired by Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda.

The celebration was launched in a a Kapihan forum was held Wednesday, which was attended by Councilor Tabanda, Jet Juinio of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, Marlene De Castro of Baguio Center for Young Adults, Vernie Diano of Gabriella-Innabuyog, P/Insp Theresa Pucay of the Baguio City Jail, Dr Celia Brillantes of the City Health Dept, Arnea Canutab of Young Women Christian Association, Adoralyn Marigsa of the Civil Service Commission and Jovie Ann Alawas Decoyna, the Nov 2008 nursing board from Bakun, Benguet.

The theme for this year's celebration is "Baguio Centennial: Women as Co-builders of the City". To highlight the celebration, a "Search for the Outstanding Centennial Women Leaders of Baguio City", will be undertaken. These women leaders may be chosen from any sector or field of endeavor.

According to Tabanda, the search aims to give emphasis on women who help in the development of the city of Baguio and who work shoulder to shoulder, side by side with the men in making the city - what it is today.

Tabanda also lauded Mayor Peter Rey Bautista, for his support to women, as she announced that Bautista has just recently re-activated the city's Gender Equality and Development Council, making Baguio one of the only seven LGUs nationwide that have a Gender Equality and Development Code.

Other activities lined-up for the "Kababaihan Festival" include kick-off activity at the City Hall and a Tree Planting activity on March 2; a Grand Parade/program and the awarding program for the Outstanding Centennial Women Awards, together with the recognition of NGOs catering to Women Welfare and Most Active Barangay Women's Organizations, on March 10 at the Convention center. The awarding of the Most Active Barangay Women Organization will be held at the SM Entertainment Plaza on March 18.

There will also be a showcase of programs and services, beauty and business air and citywide yard sale at the Convention Center on March 10. A Women's Summit and Slogan/Poster Making contest is being planned, which schedules and details are still being finalized. (PIA) [top]
