La Trinidad's Strawberry Festival set on March 8-23

by Lito Dar

Baguio City (28 February) -- The municipality of La Trinidad, Benguet will be holding Strawberry Festival 2009 from March 8 to 23, with the theme "Sustaining Our Gains and Looking Beyond."

The municipal government, in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT-CAR), launched the festival activities in a kapihan Forum Thursday.

In the said forum, DOT Director Pura Molintas lauded the municipal government of La Trinidad for spearheading the Strawberry Festival. Tourism event like this will bring in new money for the municipality, especially, to their local products and with the kind of initiative the local government is doing, DOT is very happy to support such endeavor, through promotion and physical set-up.

Molintas also reiterated that with the present global economic crunch, tourism shifts from international to domestic tourism, which will bring in more tourists and will eventually result to gains and good effects to the municipality of La Trinidad. DOT also made an infomercial for the strawberry festival which will be ready for airing by the first week of March, Molintas added.

La Trinidad mayor Artemio Galwan also believes that the global economic crunch will have lesser impact on their festival, as they are anticipating an influx of visitors. According to Galwan, they set the start of the festival just in time for the closing of the Baguio City's Panagbenga, so that the visitors that came to watch the Panagbenga could also visit or watch their Strawberry Festival.

List of activities festival include: an Agro Trade fair, Strawberry Farm tour and berry picking, launching and distribution of OTOP Seal, 24-hour photo shoot competition, Barangay night, jobs fair, battle of the bands, night of sounds and music, various strawberry contest, flower arrangement competition, essay writing contest, Dumba ni Kabajo, Benguet Grand battle of the Country Western bands and search for Ms Strawberry Festival 2009 and Mr. La Trinidad.

The Strawberry Festival main program will be held on the morning of March 18 at the municipal gym, after a civic and float parade. Other expected treats for the day are 2009 Strawberry Cake Slices, a Cultural Presentation and an "Owik". The day will be capped by a fireworks display in the evening. (PIA) [top]
