by JV Castillon

San Jose, Antique (6 May) -- Barangay Tanods from 50 barangays of the town of Tobias Fornier recently attended a 4-day capability building seminar to upgrade their knowledge and skills as local peacekeeping officers.

Mayor Ma. Orchid Fornier during the opening program said that Barangay Tanods play an important role in the community especially during disasters and calamities and in maintaining peace and order despite the fact that they only work on voluntary basis.

Barangay Tanods were created in consonance with the provisions of the Loal Government Code or Republic Act 7160 where the Punong Barangays were given the power to create groups to maintain peace and order and response team during calamities and disasters.

There are 200 barangay officials and tanods that attended the seminar. Among the topics discussed were Tanod Professionalism Review, Tanod as 117 Service Responder, Barangay Tanod Federation, Legal Basis of the Creation of Tanod. As peacekeepers, they were also taught the basics of Arrest and handcuffingTechniques, Miranda Doctrine, First Responders, Troop Organization, Marching, Drills, Patrolling, Disaster Preparedness, First Aid and Environmental Protection.

The training was conducted through the collective efforts of the Department of Interior and Local Government, the Philippine National Police and the Municipal Government of Tobias Fornier.

PI Lorenez Losaria expressed his gratitude to the Punong Barangays of the town for allowing their Barangay Tanods to attend the training which is of great help to the police officers in crime prevention and maintenance of peace and order. (PNP/PIA) [top]
