DepEd expects smooth opening of classes for 1M youth in Region 8

Tacloban City (June 1) -- Department of Education Region 8 Director Sol F. Matugas expects a smooth and orderly opening of classes today for school year 2009-2010.

Director Matugas bared that about 982,968 school aged youth of Eastern Visayas will flock to their respective schools on June 1. Of the expected number of enrollees, 697,070 are in the elementary level while the remaining 285,898 are in the secondary level.

Director Matugas informed that ten Oplan Balik Eskwela Teams have been mobilized in the different divisions of Region 8 in order to observe and facilitate the orderly opening of classes.

The monitoring team will assess the schools as to enrolment, number of teachers, classrooms, furniture, textbooks, school environment, parents, contribution, mooe of the school, school uniforms and community stakeholders.

With the implementation of the Brigada Eskwela on May 18-22, 2009, Director Matugas said that the expectation is that all the schools have been cleaned and repaired and so the children could immediately start their regular classes on the Opening Day.

Director Matugas added that the Inter-Agency Convergence group members agencies have been mobilized to implement their respective mandates to ensure the smooth opening of classes on June 1.

Director Matugas said that the Philippine National Police has put in place Police Assistance Desks in strategic schools to ensure the safety of the pupils and students.

Welcome Back to School streamers could already be seen hanging at the gates of all the public schools in Region 8. The private schools are scheduled to open a week later. (PIA 8) [top]
