60 former NVizcaya rebels get cash assistance from gov't

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (1 June) -- At least 60 former communist rebels in the province recently received cash assistance from the national government.

The rebels who are members of the Nueva Vizcaya Rebel Returnees Association (NVRRA) received P20,000.00 each as socio-economic assistance from the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP) last May 21 at the people's stage.

The awarding of socio-economic assistance to former rebels was part of the activities linedľup during the 1st Grand "Ammungan" (gathering) festival highlighting the 170th founding anniversary celebration of the province.

OPAPP director Susan Marcaida, along with governor Luisa Cuaresma distributed the checks to the former rebels.

Marcaida in her speech said the 60 recipients were part of the 100 listed rebel returnees qualified to receive cash assistance from the national government through the OPAPP.

"We urge the other former rebels to avail of this assistance inorder to have capital for your business," she said.

She said another package of socio-economic assistance will be given to the second batch of rebel returnees as soon as the requirements will be submitted.

Marcaida said there are also other programs for the rebel returnees such as scholarships for children and skills development trainings for the former communist guerillas.

For her part, governor Luisa Cuaresma also stressed that the former rebels should use the amount for the good of their families.

Ernesto Bombarda, president of the NVRRA also thanked the OPAPP and governor Cuaresma for the assistance given to them.

"Rest assured that this assistance will be used for our livelihood projects so that we can improve our lives," he said.

Records from the provincial social welfare and development office showed that there are 85 initial beneficiaries of the OPAPP's socio-economic assistance. However, 60 recipients attended the awarding program. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
