PIA Press Release

REC validates 6 LGUs of Region 2 as entries for Zero Basura Olympics 2009

Tuguegarao City (1 June) -- Members of the Regional Ecology Committee (REC), as the official validating team for the Zero Basura Olympics Garbology Marathon, have started the field validation of the 4 municipalities and 2 cities of region 2 who qualified for the regional screening.

The validating team, chaired by the Environment Management Bureau (EMB) together with representatives from the Regional and Provincial ENRO, DILG, PIA, DA, DepEd, TESDA and DTI, have started validating all official entries on May 28 to end on June 30.

Isabela province dominated the number of entries with 2 cities (Cauayan and Santiago) and 2 municipalities (San Mateo and Cabatuan), Cagayan is represented by the Municipality of Lal-lo, Municipality of Aritao for Nueva Vizcaya while no entries qualified from Quirino and Batanes, because the two provinces don't have any problems on solid wastes.

The team will validate each entry as to their strict compliance with the essential mandate of Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001 on the law of segregation from the source to the collection up to the destination.

Among the major criteria are the efficient composting, recycling, appropriate technology for residual wastes with bias for local, low-cost indigenous inventions, livelihood components and people participation.

Regional Director Lormelyn Claudio of the EMB-Region 2 said, the marathon is in aid of clean, green and good governance. It also aims to encourage the cities and municipalities most especially the urbanize ones to conquer garbage within their territorial command.

"The program will also highlight and recognize novel and creative approaches on ecological solid waste management that can serve as models for other LGUs," Claudio added.

Based on the criteria for evaluation, all efforts of the local officials and all sectors of the society who are actively supporting the program on solid waste management are given points. The winners to be declared will represent the region in the national level. (Ver/PIA-Cagayan) [top]
