Davao City (2 June) -- Region XI was the highest in availing livelihood loans granted by the Department of Labor and Employment for the year 2008, this according to DOLE Regional director Jalilo dela Torre.
Guesting at the weekly media forum Kapihan sa Dabaw held last June 1 at Café Rhysus inside SM-City Davao, dela Torre said that P16 to P17-million worth of livelihood loans were tapped mostly by workers displaced by the effects of the worldwide economic recession.
DOLE-XI is coming up with assistance packages to help mitigate the slowdown with livelihood loans and projects and skills training.
Among its projects are the micro-enterprise development - Grow Micro program and rubber plantation development program where the DOLE intends to distribute 50,000 seedlings to cover an area of 4,000 hectares for rubber production.
Davao Region has registered an unemployment rate of 5.8% which is among the lowest in the country whose average unemployment rate stands at 7.7%. According to dela Torre, during the discussions for the proposed DOLE-XI budget with the National Economic Development Authority, an estimated P69-million budget has been proposed of which 70 percent will be for projects while 30% will be allotted for personnel.
