Feature: Enrolment in public elementary, secondary schools seen to rise this school year

Cagayan de Oro City (2 June) -- An estimated 5% increase in the enrolment of elementary pupils and 3% in secondary students are expected in Northern Mindanao, this incoming school year (SY) 2009-2010.

Thus disclosed Estrella Abid-Babano, Regional Director of the Department of Education (DepEd), Region 10, who said the exact enrolment figures will be finalized after all the region's 13 schools divisions will submit their reports in about a few days.

She said last school year, DepEd noted a total enrolment of 847,487 in the public elementary and secondary schools of the region, of whom 624,081 were in the elementary and 223,406 were in the secondary level.

Data at the Basic Education Information System (BEIS) also show that the region had a total of 17,723 nationally-paid teachers in the elementary level placing the pupil-teacher ratio at an average of 35:1 or 35 pupils per teacher and a total of 16,385 instructional rooms placing the pupil-room ratio at an average of 38:1 or 38 pupils per room.

Babano said the biggest enrolment of elementary pupils was in the schools division of Bukidnon with 180,535, followed by Misamis Oriental, 105,938, Lanao del Norte, 82,136, Cagayan de Oro City, 73,040, Iligan City, 45,634 and Valencia City, 25,505.

As to pupil-teacher ratio in the same level, Valencia City had 41:1 or 41 pupils per teacher, Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro, 40:1 or 40 pupils per teacher, Misamis Oriental, 36:1or 36 pupils per teacher and Lanao del Norte and Tangub City, 35:1 or 35 pupils per teacher.

Again, the pupil-instructional room ratio in the elementary level was also noted in the following schools division: Cagayan de Oro City, 49:1 or 49 pupils per room, Valencia City, 48:1 or 48 pupils per room, Bukidnon, 42:1 or 42 pupils per room, Gingoog City, 39:1 or 39 pupils per room, Misamis Oriental, 38:1 or 38 pupils per room and Lanao del Norte, 36:1 or 36 pupils per room.

Meanwhile, a total of 17,555 nationally-paid teachers were noted in the secondary level placing the student-teacher ratio at an average of 39:1 or 39 students per teacher and a total of 4,035 instructional rooms placing the student-room ratio at an average of 55:1 or 55 students per room.

Biggest enrolment in the secondary level was also noted in the schools division of Bukidnon with 50,454, followed by Misamis Oriental, 50,362, Cagayan de Oro City, 30,221, Iligan City, 21,956 and Lanao del Norte, 19,040.

As to student-teacher ratio in the same level, Valencia City had 53:1 or 53 students per teacher, Bukidnon, 45:1 or 45 students per teacher, Cagayan de Oro City, 42:1 or 42 students per teacher, Misamis Oriental, 40:1 or 40 students per teacher, Ozamiz City, 38:1 or 38 students per teacher and Misamis Occidental, 36:1 or 36 students per teacher.

On the other hand, the student-room ratio in the secondary level were as follows: Cagayan de Oro City, 68:1 or 68 students per room, Misamis Oriental, 61:1 or 61 students per room, Iligan City, 59:1 or 59 students per room, Ozamiz City, 55:1 or 55 students per room, Tangub City, 54:1or 54 students per room and Valencia City, 53:1 or 53 students per room.
