PCA distributes farm implements in Samar
By Ninfa B Quirante
Catbalogan City (June 2) -- The Philippine Coconut Authority in Samar started distributing corn and salt fertilizers to coconut farmers in the 26 local government units.
The biggest allocation of corn went to Motiong town with 80 bags of 10-kilo corn seeds.
Hinabangan and Marabut had 20 bags of corn with attendant Bio N organic fertilizers for the farmers.
Other towns got 40 while others got 60 bags.
The corn seeds will be used along with coconuts for intercropping.
As for salt fertilizers for their coconuts, farmers in Samar received a total allocation of 708 bags with 50 kilos each with Calbayog getting some 120 bag-allocation.
Today, Pinabacdao withdrew 80 bags as promised by PCA Provincial Coconut Development Manager Emiberto Acasio.
Salt fertilization under the National Coconut Productivity Program aims to address low coconut productivity in the province.
PCA said that this is the cheapest and best source of chlorine which will not only boost the productivity of coconut but also enhance resistance to long dry spell.
The comprehensive coconut productivity program will boost the country's coconut industry which is consistent with President Gloria-Macapagal-Arroyo's Hunger Mitigation Master Plan, added Acasio.
Although Acasio admitted that some cynical farmers have refused the offered fertilizers, still most coconut farmers welcome the farm implement with grateful hearts. (PIA-Samar) [top]
