Maasin City dad launches smoking ban in public work places

Maasin City (June 2) -- Maasin City Mayor Maloney Samaco launched the No Smoking Day yearly celebration during the Flag Ceremony program among the Maasin City hall employees last June 1 to initiate the campaign against smoking epidemic and for the people to claim their right to health and healthy living in the locality.

The World Health Organization called for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day every year on 31 May.

Mayor Maloney Samaco inculcated among the city hall employees to support in the implementation of smoking ban in public places especially within the vicinities of the city hall offices. However, that for a start, he will not be to keen for a total ban in smoking yet but will designate areas in public working places for a smoking area.

He will urge the Sangguniang Panglungsod to study the legality and chances to increase cigarette taxes in the locality so as to discourage smoke users from buying expensive cigarettes.

Samaco also disclosed of the latest findings on the effects of the remnants of smokes emitted in clothes, curtains, among others to the tertiary smokers which is also detrimental to the health of the people. Secondary smokers are those who inhaled the discharged cigarette smokes to unsuspected nearest person to a smoker.

Mayor Samaco said the Maasin City jail is the first public work area where smoking was banned for over a year now.

It was even replicated by the regional jail management in imposing smoking ban inside the prison centers throughout the region. The jail guards were also cheered by the mayor for not smoking in the jail premises also.
