Only 596 displaced in Region XI, DOLE says

by JD Abangan

Davao City (4 June) -- There were only a total of 596 Displaced workers in Southern Mindanao, which showed that the local economy is less affected by the global financial crisis, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) XI Regional Director Jalilo Dela Torre said.

Joining the Ugnayang Bayan yesterday (Wednesday), Dela Torre said only 298 of the total monitored displaced workers fell out of job from local employment while the rest were retrenched from overseas.

He however could not assure to hit zero unemployment targets in the region by the yearend despite the series of job fairs and job bridging activities because the global economies are still wobbling due to pressures of the financial crisis.

"I can't say with certainty that we are over the hump. We just have to do everything we can to pump-prime the economy," he said.

Dela Torre revealed that most displaced workers were coming from the mining sector.

DOLE XI has been able to assist displaced workers who are among the beneficiaries of the P9 million livelihood assistance released from January to April this year through the DOLE Integrated Livelihood programs.

Among the livelihood programs of DOLE are the Grow Micro Program that extends micro-credit assistance, social protection and marketing linkages and provides training services, business mentoring and advisory to the informal sector.

DOLE's Rural and Upland Barangays Benefiting from Employment in Rubber (RUBBER) Project is being implemented with local government units (LGUs), people's organization, cooperatives, the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). It aims to help formulate a five-year development plan for rubber in Davao Region based on the National Strategic Plan for Rubber.

The Technology Resources for the Employment and Advancement of Davao Youth TechREADY aims to leverage the power of the internet to exploit and maximize employment, self-employment, training and business opportunities for the youth.

The Workers Income Augmentation Program (WINAP) is a non-wage benefit for workers in the formal sector by engaging them into business ventures to augment their salaries/wages through their share in the business profit and the employment of their family members.

DOLE is also implementing the Tulong Alalay sa Taong May Kapansanan (TULAY) which provides job placement, training and self-employment opportunities for the handicapped while its Integrated Services for Livelihood Advancement (ISLA) of the Fisherfolk gives assistance to fishing communities.

The implementation of Grow Micro, TechREADY, TUPAD and ISLA as of June 1 yielded a total of 3,286 employment and released a total of P12,916,000 livelihood assistance.

DOLE is also the lead agency of running the Nurses Assigned in Rural Services (NARS) which provides employment to new nursing graduates who are given by DOLE P8,000 monthly wages.

Dela Torre said 175 nurses have been deployed for six months in Southern Mindanao through NARS and more would be hired on the June 12 Independence Day Jobs Fair that will be conducting. (PIA XI) [top]
