Region 8 joins RP in beating the heat and working for a safer environment

Tacloban City (June 5) -- Eastern Visayas Region joins the whole nation in the celebration of World Environment Day on June 5 and the National Environment Month this whole month of June.

The World Environment Day is a vehicle through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action on the protection of the environment.

In observance of the twin celebrations, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources spearheads the activities on June 5 anchored on the theme "Your Planet Needs You:Unite to Combat Climate Change, DENR Forester Ramon Calumbay and Regional Information Officer Purificacion Daloos informed during the Panindugan television program of the Philippine Information Agency.

Ms. Daloos said that the June 5 World Environment Day celebration will start with the offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at the Sto. Nino Church at 7:00 o'clock in the morning. This will be followed by a Motorcade along the city's major thoroughfares at 9:00 o'clock, which will be participated in by the representatives of various government agencies, environmental groups and the public.

The participants have been requested to come up with slogans and posters on the theme to be dispayed on their respective vehicles. The Motorcade aims to call the attention and catch the interest of the public on the importance of protecting and conserving the bounties of nature.

A program at Rizal Park that will highlight the significance of the day, will cap the day's activities, Forester Calumbay said as he enjoined the participation of all sectors in celebrating the Philippine Environment Month this month of June.

The DENR has also tapped the support of the different religious denominations in Eastern Visayas so that all Sunday masses on June 3 shall be dedicated to the cause of environmental protection. (PIA 8) [top]
