Tacloban City (June 5) -- While the Philippine Army is on its toes in suppressing insurgency in Northern Samar, it is also actively fighting'global warming" or climate change.
Colonel Arnulfo Atendido, commanding officer of the 803rd Brigade has directed his battalion commanders and their men to take the role of "environment protectors" in their respective areas of operation in Western and Northern Samar by stopping illegal logging activities, illegal fishing and other similar activities that destroy the environment.
The directive was made during a conference on May 15, 2009 at the 803rd Brigade Headquarters as part of the battalion commanders' guidance.
Colonel Atendido mentioned about the rampant illegal logging activities especially in the municipalities of Catarman, San Isidro, Las Navas in Northern Samar and San Jose de Buan and Matuguinao in Samar.
Colonel Atendido also mentioned about the illegal fishing activities in Zumarraga and Daram towns in Samar and Biri and Mondragon in Northern Samar.
About 30% of the lumber sales goes to the communist terrorist armed group as part of revolutionary taxation while illegal fishing activities, although there were no reported taxation, will damage heavily the fish sanctuary, Colonel Atendido added.
Furthermore, the good commander underscored that the no negotiation policy must be effected on all apprehended culprits.
More over, Colonel Atendido warned his troops that anyone caught engaged in such illegal activities will be dealt with accordingly if found guilty. (PIA 8) [top]
