More public elementary students get free school supplies from Bacolod City gov't

Bacolod City (5 June) -- Eight more public elementary schools with its students received free school supplies from the local government of Bacolod.

The distribution was led by Mayor Evelio Leonardia together with other local officials as they are making their rounds on the different public schools to give away free school bags and supplies.

Leonardia expressed hopes that distribution of school supplies to all public elementary schools will be completed early next week.

Students and their respective parents were elated with the school supplies given by the City Government. Marilyn Malunes, a mother of three children who all got the free school supplies, expressed gratitude to Leonardia and the City Government saying that the free school supplies greatly reduced her school opening expenses.

Joseph Treyes, a grade 2 student, on the other hand was thankful as he finally got hold of a new bag for the first time ever since he started school.

Leonardia stressed that it is a major thrust of the City Government to help lessen the financial burden of the ordinary citizens. The mayor said that the giving of the free school supplies is one way of helping the Bacoleņos cope with their financial needs particularly during school opening season.

Leonardia further said that the present economic downturn led the City Government to come up with this project.

The City Government spent about P7 million to purchase the school supplies. The city also shells out at least P9.7 million every year to subsidize the miscellaneous fees paid by students during enrollment to all public schools in Bacolod.

The city has been subsidizing the miscellaneous fees in public schools ever since 2004. The mayor stressed that this is to encourage parents to send their children to school despite poverty.

Students who got the free school supplies were from A. Mabini Elementary School, F.F. Gonzaga Elementary School, Patricia Homes Elementary School, Vista Alegre-Granada Relocation Elementary School, A.L. Lizares Elementary School, Fr. Gratian Murray Integrated School, R. Alunan Elementary School, and Alberto Arceo Elementary School. (CMO/PIA/EAD) [top]
