Commentary: Environment is a concern of every FIlipino

Tacloban City (June 7) -- The month of June is not only celebrated as the National Environment Month, it is also in this month when the whole world observes the World Environment Day on June 5, the Philippine Eagle Week on June 4-10, Arbor Day on June 25 and recently, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared the third week of June as the Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week.

"Environmental management is a shared responsibility among all stakeholders," Secretary Angelo T. Reyes said. It is because of this reason that he urged the public to participate in the annual celebration of the month of June as Environment Month following the theme "Your Planet Needs You: Unite to Protect the Environment."

DENR Regional Executive Director Regidor De Leon described clearly the function of DENR when he stated that DENR's functions starts up there in the air and end down under the ground.

DENR's role encompasses the clean air that we breath, the trees that produce chlorophyll so that carbon monoxide will not be able to poison us all and end down under with the mineral wealth hidden underneath the earth.

He said that the annual celebration of the National Environment Month is one way of increasing public awareness about the urgency of the need to protect and preserve our environment.

Several activities have been and will be undertaken in celebration of the Environment Month. Topping the list is the Motorcade along the main thoroughfares of Tacloban City on June 5 in order to drumbeat the celebration. Environmentalists participated in the Motorcade which followed a Mass at the Sto. Nino Church.

The program which followed had Regional Development Council Chairman and Calbayog City Mayor Mel Senen Sarmiento who reported about the Climate Change Summit conducted by all the Visayas Regions.

As RED De Leon said, "let us share in the responsibility of managing the environment properly so that we can enliven the now lethargic environment. (PIA 8) [top]
