Iligan City (8 June) -- The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA)-Port Management Office, Iligan City, in coordination with the Safety Organization of the Philippines, Inc. (SOPI), Iligan City Chapter, led the kick-off activity in the observance of Port and Sea Safety Month in June.
Port Manager Prudencio B. Mercado, Jr. of PPA Iligan said that through Presidential Proclamation No. 115-A, the observance falls every month of June, making the public aware of safety and the prevention of accidents at port and at sea.
We started the activity with a short program at the Port of Iligan grounds early morning of 01 June and ended with a motorcade around the city's major thoroughfares, Mercado said.
The program highlighted with messages shared among the participants by Iligan City Fire Marshall Alan A. Cabot of Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Acting Station Commander Dennis Rem C. Labay of Philippine Coast Guard Iligan (PCG), and City Councilor Chonilo O. Ruiz- committee chairman on Environment and Natural Resources, represented by his staff.
The closing statement was delivered by Engr. Antoine D. Seva, president of SOPI, Iligan City Chapter, who is also the concurrent chairman on the Committee on Health, Safety and Environment of the Iligan Bay Chamber of Industries (IBCI).
Each speaker has pointed out their corresponding duties and responsibilities, implementing the rules and regulations to improve environment management, pollution prevention and cleaner production methods, at seas and ports in particular.
On the other hand, Port Manager Mercado said they have outlined calendar of activities, joining the nationwide observance of Environment Month in June.
Vessel inspection is scheduled on the first week of June depending on its arrival at the Iligan Port.
Schedule of "Coastal Clean Up Day" in Barangay Poblacion, this City, is set on the second week.
Rounds of inspection to ports (government and private) falls on the third week. The team shall include inspection of buildings and office in these ports, said Mercado.
The Team, composed of representatives from the PPA, PCG, BFP, SOPI, and Fishery/Plant and Veterinary Quarantine Offices, will conduct the inspection.
It is expected that the findings and recommendations discussed with the Team and the port representative during the last year's inspection have been acted upon by the port concern and that this is an opportune time to have the Team assist in the identification of the deficiency/new loss control opportunities in the area inspected, expressed Mercado.
The BFP has also scheduled Seminar/Fire Prevention Management lectures to participating departments and offices, Mercado added.
The month-long celebration will be highlighted with an Interport Fire Brigade Skills Competition, which is on its 7th year this 2009. (PIA Lanao del Norte) [top]
