DA-12 awards six Outstanding Regional Gawad Saka achievers

Koronadal City (8 June) -- The month-long celebration of the Farmer's and Fisherfolks' this month of May culminated with the awarding of Outstanding Farmers/Organizations in Central Mindanao.

Four farmers, one farmer association and local government unit were honored by the Department of Agriculture in region 12 for their exemplary accomplishments as individuals and institutions in raising agricultural production in the region.

OIC-Regional Executive Director Tommy A. Ala spearheaded the awarding for the Outstanding Regional Gawad Saka Achievers at the Agricultural Training Institute in Tantangan, South Cotabato on May 29, 2009. Given recognition were Mr. Morlito Apuzin as Outstanding Coconut Farmer and Rocaiya Kasan-Outstanding Small Ruminant Raiser, both from Tupi, South Cotabato and Jeffrey Evangelista of Sto. Niņo, South Cotabato as Outstanding Young Farmer. They received P10,000 cash gift and Certificate of Awards. Likewise, a certificate and a cash prize of P40,000 was awarded to Grace Buenaflor of Arakan, North Cotabato as Regional Outstanding Quality Corn Farmer.

Meanwhile, the Tupi Balangon/Bongolan Growers Association (TUBAGA) of Tupi South Cotabato was declared as the Regional winner of the Search for Secretary's Award for Outstanding Organic Farming Initiative (Certified Farm Category) and Municipality of Surallah, South Cotabato for the Local Government Unit Category. They both received Certificate of Awards and P10,000 each.

According to Dir. Ala, all of the regional gawad saka achievers for this year are among the national finalists. He said the region has a big potential to be competitive from other regions. He encourages farmers to be more active in their endeavors to sustain agricultural and fishery production.

He also recognized the industry, sacrifices and perseverance of the outstanding agricultural achievers in propelling the agriculture sector of the region.

On the other hand, South Cotabato Provincial Agriculture & Fishery Council (PAFC) Chairman Felipe Uy recommended the creation of Outstanding Gawad Saka Alumni Council of region 12. The objective of this is to recognize and honor the contribution of all outstanding farmers of the region.

This proposal was supported by Director Ala and Regional AFC Chairman Mabini Manalo and ordered fastracking of their noble undertaking.

The Gawad Saka Search is an annual project of the Department of Agriculture for farmer individuals or group of farmers as extraordinary trendsetters in farming, animal-raising and fisheries. The search of extra-ordinary farmers is competed at the regional and national level.

Prior to the culmination, various activities were undertaken like the provincial farm family congresses participated by farmers/fisherfolks, Rural Improvement Clubs (RICs) and the 4-H Club.

Highlights of celebration is the sport fest conducted by DA-12 for its employees.

Dir. Ala spearheaded the bowling and the indoor games like chess, dart, scrabble and others.

The activity aimed at enhancing camaraderie among its employees which is vital in employees service productivity.

DA-12 also honored the birthday celebrators from January to May where employees due recognition, more than a pat on their shoulder to further service all the more. (eapasaol/da-rafid12/PIA 12) [top]
