Feature: Sangguniang Kabataan in ComVal…for LIFE!
Compostela Valley Province (9 June) -- The Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) provincewide gathered last June 3, 2009 at the Provincial Capitol for an SK Summer Eco Camp with the theme, "Sangguniang Kabataan: Sulo sa Kinaiyahan." Their battle cry is 1-2-Tree For Life! 1 stands for each individual, 2 for helping one another, in growing a Tree for life.
For a start, a holy mass was celebrated at the Social Hall where the opening ceremony was also held. With her office spearheading the event, the SK Provincial Federation President, Hon. Anna Jhoanna Y. Sarenas warmly welcomed everybody especially the SK leaders and officials coming from the province's 11 municipalities telling them that even in their own simple way they must be united in storing the beauty of nature.
Inspiring messages for the youth have been delivered. DILG Provincial Director Abito D. Bernasor emphasized that instead of looking at the youth as the hope of the future, the right line to tell is that the youth itself is the future. And to fulfill a bright future, the youth should light up the torch and must become seeds to grow and become trees.
Governor Arturo T. Uy who manifested his all-out-support to the province's youth programs, delighted the SKs by rendering songs. He said that to help preserve the environment is a good endeavor. That's why landslides happen because there are no more trees. "It's no longer,'Ang Kabataan ang Pag-asa ng Bayan' but'Ang Kabataan ang s'yang aasahan ng Bayan,' he further encouraged them.
The keynote speaker of the program was Honorable. Maria Carmen Zamora- Apsay, Senior Board Member. Sharing more on her experience as an SK leader before, she challenged the young crowd that being an SK leader would mean a big responsibility and a big opportunity as well, a privilege not given to all the youth. She also said, for a leader, attitude really matters.
No government programs could bring someone or a leader to where he would be, it is the kind of the person's attitude towards that certain program that helps him become what he must be.
For her, SK has helped her become what she is now. Having Governor Uy's efficient and effective leadership as reference, she told the young audience with a smile, "Since you are the next in line generation, you must not only be a leader… but be a leader by example."
As a form of empowerment and to express their youthful energy by showing up their talents, they conducted competitions on dancing, singing and a Search for Hiyas Ng Kalikasan. The Municipality of Compostela garnered the first place in the modern dance competition respectively followed by Maragusan (2nd), Pantukan (3rd), Maco (4th), and Montevista (5th).
On the song solo, Ms.. Rewel Jenn D. Potane of Maragusan got the 1st place while Ms. Apple Grace M. Flores of Mawab was the 2nd, Ms. Liza Mae Baya of Laak, 3rd, Ms. Cyrose Grace Sabroso of Monkayo, 4th, and Ms. Jannah Rose S. Tautho of Pantukan, the 5th place. Winning the crown for the Search for Hiyas Ng Kalikasan is Ms. Queen Anne C. Tidlos from Maco who at the same time received minor awards like Best in Fantasy Attire and Best in Recycled Material Attire.
Next to her is Ms. Jizelle Dea L. Formilleza of Monkayo, followed by Ms. Novie Grace M.Hiponia of Compostela, Ms. Karei M. Vista of Nabunturan as the 4th, and Ms. Gretchen Mae Salavia of Mawab as the 5th runner-up who also received the Best in Neo-Ethnic Attire Award.
Aside from the SK Chairmen and officials, the event was also graced all throughout by the DILG's MLGOOs, Governor Arturo T. Uy, and the ever supportive Sangguniang Panlalawigan members led by Vice Governor Ramil L. Gentugaya. (gras/ ids-comval) [top]
