Only in the Philippines: Most unique sports event in Tagum City

Tagum City (9 June) -- Four (4) colorful teams representing the different sectors of the gay community paraded on the main streets of Tagum City at as the clock strucked exactly at around 5pm.

Employees, students, shoppers, drivers, and passers by rushed themselves to the streets witnessing the Binuhat (Tagum term for gay) cheering and yelling their respective teams at the opening of the 1st Extreme Fun Gaymes in the Philippines which slated on June 4-7, 2009 at Rotary Park, Tagum City.

This is extremely unique because the games played by the Binuhat were all modified and re-invention such as the BasketBukag (modified basketball in which goal is a typical Filipino basket); Supak Takraw (modified game against the mechanics in playing sepak takraw, supak means "against with"); Away Lapukay (a no-rule mud wrestling); Hala Bira (a modified tug-of-war); LaLu (modified dual athletics and referred to LA-layat (Binuhat term for running), LU-lupad, (Binuhat term for speed); BaktaSathon (modified walkathon); aGAYzing RACE (a modified adventure race); Tira-Pataka (modified football) and the BugaSiga (a fire dance competition).

Salon artists/owners, fashion designers, cultural workers, teachers and other professional workers gathered together at Rotary Park displaying their vigor and vitality competing in the game ONLI IN DA PILIPINAS.

Regular slot of the game begin at 5pm after working hours and allowing the Tagumeños and other Mindanaoans enjoying with their family and friends to witness the 4 day event. Extreme Fun Gaymes is just a prelude of the Binuhat Festival which shall be slated next month, July 21-27, 2009.

This game was realized because the City of Tagum Tourism Council (CTTC) and the Tagum City Gay Association Incorporated (TCGAI) wanted to carve out the sports activity from the regular Binuhat festivities which is a celebration of gender advocacy and socio-economic contribution of the gay community to their cities and provinces.

Teams are being clustered according to their geographical location of their respective barangays. Urban and rural barangays are grouped together in accordance to their strength and membership.

This is a part of Mayor Rey T. Uy's administrative directions of setting the importance of gay in the community in the socio-cultural development of Tagum. Right now the gay association is a SEC registered and is governed by its articles of incorporation and by-laws and it was lawfully guided because of the assistance of the Mayor and Mrs. Alma Uy, CTTC Chairperson.

Aside from the city government and the tourism council, this extreme fun sports was supported by Honorable Robert "Tete" So, Honorable De Carlo "Oyo" Uy, Vice-Governor Baby Suaybaguio, Miko's Brew and Power Up, Mr. Noe "Butchoy" Taojo, Engr. Jun Logronio, Tagum Water District and the City Tourism, Engineering (Physical Set-Up/Electrical), City Band, Tagum City PNP, Tagum City Traffic Management Unit and the Tagum City Fire Department.

Kudos to the brilliant ideas of Ms. Alma Uy, Darwin F. Suyat, Ma.Ed. President of TCGAI and Jun Jamero (Tourism Council Consultant) for making this very exceptional sports adventure in the Philippines.

Come and visit the park and be a living witness of this extra-ordinary fun games in your life where laughter shall truly kicked out your tears. (Cromwell with Jun Jamero/CIO Tagum) [top]
