Catarman, Northern Samar (9 June) -- Municipal Veterinarians, Municipal Agriculture Officers (MAOs), agriculture technicians and members of the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) gathered together on June 3-4 last for a two day contingency planning on Avian Influenza.
Topics discussed included some updates on the National Avian Influenza Prevention Program presented by the Department of Agriculture along with Avian Influenza Prevention for Animals (stages 1 & 2) and Avian Influenza Prevention for Human (stages 3 & 4) given by Dr. Alejandro C. Lucban of the Provincial Health Office.
Engr. Romeo M. Cardenas, the provincial planning and development coordinator who represented the governor lauded the contingency planning organizers for exerting efforts in conducting this contingency planning and stressed that an "ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure."
Provincial veterinarian Dr. Jose Luis A. Acompañado expressed optimism that at the end of the activity, the MAOs could create and organize their own Avian Task Force. He also expected that each municipality could produce local ordinances related to the prevention and control of AI and finally prepare their own stock inventory and contingency plans.
Part of the workshop was the modular discussions on the Philippine Disaster Management System given by Dr. Angel Gaviola, Regional Director of the Office of Civil Defense.
The two-day contingency planning was concluded with the presentation and critiquing of output based on specific situations. Draft contingency plans of each municipality were likewise presented. (PIA Northern Samar) [top]
