South Cotabato joins in celebration of Environment Month

by Rhodz Beñez

Koronadal City (9 June) -- As the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) celebrates World Environment Day on June 5, 2009 and the entire month of June as the Philippine Environment Month, the South Cotabato Provincial Environment Office (PEMO) together with Environment Management Bureau (EMB) will hold on the mobile roadside monitoring of Ozone depleting substances.

Mr. Ramon Ponce-de Leon of PEMO as interviewed by Philippine Information Agency 12 said that this celebration will promote awareness on air pollution and climate change, two of the country's biggest environmental challenges in line with this year's celebration of environment month.

This he said is aimed to create public awareness on the impact of climate change and will center on the theme "Your Planet Needs You- Unite to Combat Climate Change."

Aside from the mobile roadside monitoring of Ozone depleting substances, the said agencies also conducted a tree planting in Lake Hulon in T'boli, South Cotabato and clean up drive in Lake Sebu town.

The clean up drive was gathered about 270 kilograms of plastics collected from roadside of Talisay down to Seven Falls.

Also discussed at the weekly media forum initiated by the South Cotabato Provincial Government are the issues regarding "Understanding the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (R.A. 9003): Its Salient Provisions and Recent Developments of Its Implementation" and "Understanding the Philippine Clean Air Act (R.A. 8749)".
