Catbalogan folks anxiously await SC decision on citihood

Catbalogan City (June 10) -- Catbaloganons are anxiously waiting for the Supreme Court decision re its appeal for the citihood bid of Catbalogan.
In an appeal to the townsfolk, the city administration distributed leaflets urging the populace to join prayer vigils and masses scheduled for the intention that the Supreme Court's scheduled deliberation, today, June 9 will be favourable to the City government of Catbalogan.
It will be recalled that 16 other earlier 'proclaimed' cities have been stripped off their citihood by the Supreme Court in an earlier ruling.
The decision stemmed from a complaint filed by the League of Cities of the Philippines in March last year.
Member-cities' claim that the massive conversion of municipalities into cities would result to the decrease of the internal revenue allotment (IRA) of the existing cities in the country as more would be taking part of the IRA.
On June 2, 2009, the Philippine Daily Inquirer carried a full page ad from the League of Cities strongly opposing House Bill No. 6303 and calling for its outright rejection.
The ad further said that the 16 municipalities (Catbalogan included) have caused the filing of House Bill 6303 seeking to amend section 450 of the Local Government Code by exempting the 16 municipalities from the income required by law. (PIA-Samar) [top]
