DA-7 to give free vegetable seeds tomorrow during independence Day celebration

Cebu City (June 11) -- Vegetable seeds for backyard gardening will be given tomorrow by the Department of Agriculture (DA-7) as it opens its livelihood fair in celebration of the country's 111th Philippine Independence Day.

Department of Agriculture (DA-7) Regional Technical Director for Operations Angel Enriquez bared that vegetable seeds like eggplant, ampalaya, okra, red squash and string beans that make up the viand 'pinakbet' will be given free tomorrow as part of their agency's thrust to promote vegetable gardening especially in urban areas.

Apart from the free vegetable seedlings, the DA-7 will also provide livelihood assistance like cattle farming and swine raising to those who are interested, Enriquez said.

Enriquez further said that their office has given livelihood assistance to identified beneficiaries in Cebu City worth P260,000 in the areas of swine fattening and raising and tocino and chorizo making.

Fifteen job contracts will also be awarded to beneficiaries tomorrow as part of their compliance to Pres. Arroyo's mandate to provide temporary jobs particularly to displaced workers affected by the global economic crisis good for six months under the Comprehensive Livelihood Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP).

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-7) Acting Regional Director Exequiel Sarcauga earlier said 113 checks that will benefit 3,271 beneficiaries for livelihood assistance and 4,385 scholarship grants will be awarded tomorrow among others worth P12.9 M during the commemorative program at the SM entertainment plaza.

Meanwhile, DepEd officials said Filipino values such as 'Makabayan' or 'love of country' and the essence of nationalism are integrated in elementary and high school subjects.

Dep Ed-7 information officer Lea Apao said history is very important to teach to young students particularly on how the country gained its true identity and regained its independence so they could truly value their sense of Filipino pride and nationalism. (PIA-Cebu/FCR) [top]
