MP supports bill imposing fees on plastic bags by business establishments

by Juliet B. Saley

Bontoc, Mt. Province (12 June) -- Recognizing the destruction caused by plastic bags to the environment and its disastrous effect to the people and every living creature on earth, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan here passed a resolution strongly supporting a House bill imposing fees on plastic bags in retail establishments.

The provincial government here is among the advocates of solid waste management and discourages every form of pollution of the environment, the Provincial Board said.

House Bill 4134, filed by Albay Representative Al Francis Bichara, pushes for the imposition of a P2.50 excise tax on every plastic bag issued by business establishment.

This bill which aim to discourage consumers from using these non-biodegradable packaging materials, is expected to decrease the consumption and usage of plastic bags which are given free by retail establishments to consumers.

Under the bill, the plastic bag fee will go to the "Environmental Protection Support fund" that will be used to fund anti-pollution projects, and develop eco-friendly waste management and landfill systems. (PIA MP) [top]
